Solid Wood Floor Boards for Sale Durban

Ocean Timber Products manufactures solid wood floor boards in various species of timber. They are normally made up as required from rough stock.

Locally grown timbers such as pine and Saligna are available in longer lengths at around 3m each. These are normally tongue and grooved and ready for installation. When using Saligna we normally use 90% clears or selects, as is commonly known in the timber industry. This term relates to the number of knots per square metre. Our Saligna is generally sourced from Mpumalanga which produces a higher quality of Saligna than KZN. It is about 90% clear and very stable. One should be careful of Saligna sourced from KZN as it is not as stable and can expand or contract at a higher rate than the timber sourced from Mpumalanga.

Other exotic timbers such as oak, teak etc. are not always available in such long lengths and as such they are end matched. End matched is a term that is given to tongue and grooving all four sides of the board. If a board is only tongue and grooved on two sides you will need to cut it where it meets a bearer and start a new run from there. When it is end matched it can be terminated mid way between two bearers as it will fit into the next board on that row of floor boards. So the waste is generally lower on end matched as opposed to long boards. It is also necessary to machine this way for exotics because the boards available are generally only between 450 and 1.5m.

The solid wood floor boards we sell are all suitable for either suspended floors or gluing down to a concrete substrate.

It is advisable to allow the floor boards at least two weeks to acclimatize on site, in the area that they are to be installed, before installing them. Timber moves through expansion and contraction and moisture. If they are installed before this has occurred then there are chances of either the boards popping through expansion or small gaps appearing between boards through contraction.

The time of year is also important when laying floor boards. The different seasons bring with them changes in temperature and moisture and this should be considered and methods of laying them taken into account. If moisture and temperatures are set to rise with the onset of summer, then the boards can be expected to expand after installing them. It is sometimes advisable to lay them loose. In other words not tight up against each other. The opposite is true for winter when moisture and temperatures are expected to decrease.
